Fashionable Sustainability: Through My Eyes

Sustainable fashion to me means that clothing, footwear and accessories are made with the purpose of sustaining the planet or being respectful of the planet and the creatures who live on it. Choosing natural fiber made fabrics along with safe and kind business practices toward laborers with fair wages is important in this matter.

I had an idea recently that if fashion houses bought back the old clothing of its own brand and recycled or repurposed them into new garments out of the old fabric, it would create a while new industry of fashion recycling with new jobs. I also believe that it would take each company’s sight off of overproduction.

Having the industry unanimously become completely transparent in sourcing their fabrics and other materials along with education tidbits of what that means in their advertisements.

Something that surprised me about the fashion industry is how much water is used but it made complete sense at the same time because there are not many major fashion brands that come from places like the desert. I personally would love to have some key items in my wardrobe that would last forever. I do like to shop and that might make me part of the problem but I've found that lately I don’t want to overhaul my closet every season. So I’m buying more thought out, versatile and well made pieces for myself instead. I like to know that what I am buying is worth the time and money I spend on it.
